Michael McDonald reflects on his unlikely musical renaissance and what inspired his first album of original material in 17 years. Michael McDonald born February 12, is an American singer-songwriter, keyboardist, and record producer known for his distinctive, soulful voice and as a member of the bands The Doobie Brothers , , present and Steely Dan McDonald has also performed as a prominent backing vocalist on numerous recordings by artists including Steely Dan , Christopher Cross , and Kenny Loggins. He is considered an influential figure in the development of the yacht rock genre. He has also recorded for television and film soundtracks. He was 'discovered' while playing with a band called Blue, and moved to Los Angeles , California, in to pursue a career in music. In , McDonald became a member of Steely Dan's touring band, singing lead and backing vocals. He also became one of the many in-studio adjunct members of the band, providing backing vocals on tracks for 's Katy Lied. McDonald continued to provide backing vocals for Steely Dan through their release, Gaucho.
Credit: Timothy White Michael McDonald , who will be rejoining his old band The Doobie Brothers for a 50th anniversary tour that's scheduled to begin in July, reveals that he's working on a new studio album, which will be preceded by an EP of recordings he made with some local musicians. McDonald tells Billboard that he was initially intending to sell the EP during the Doobie Brothers trek, but of course, that now is likely to be postponed because of the pandemic. Regarding the tour, McDonald says, "I know I'm really looking forward to it, and I hope all the other guys are up for it come next year. The soulful version of the song was recorded at a concert, and follows a live performance of Marvin Gaye 's " What's Going On " that McDonald posted on YouTube last month.
